The Planetarium was built to encourage interest in the sciences (and astronomy in particular) for North Carolina’s schoolchildren. Students in grades K-12 have come from all over the state to see Planetarium shows and explore the Science Center exhibits. Since opening in 1949, more than 4 million schoolchildren have had the Planetarium experience enrich their lives.
While those schoolchildren have fond memories of dazzling planetarium shows, Morehead’s focus on developing educational programs that align with curriculum objectives has endeared the institution with many North Carolina educators. That combination of high production standards and quality educational design has made Morehead Planetarium and Science Center a signature field trip destination for generations.
