Morehead Planetarium construction

Great Beginnings

ReGeneration will make the planetarium theater once again one of the best in the United States, just as it was when it first opened in 1949.

Construction of the planetarium took 17 months and cost more than 27 million in today’s dollars. When it opened in 1949, it was one of only six in the entire United States.

Morehead Planetarium was designed by the architectural firm of Eggers and Higgins, the same firm that had previously designed the Jefferson Memorial (which was modeled after the Pantheon in Rome). Similarities between the planetarium and Jefferson Memorial are unmistakable.
