Middle School Science Club
Grades 6, 7 and 8

Ever wanted to investigate the science of explosions? To get your hands dirty in a cutting-edge genetics lab? Or to don a hard hat and check out the inside of a power plant? Morehead's Middle School Science Club wants to give you a chance!

In this exciting program just for middle school students, college science majors and club members will work together to design activities based on club members' interests. Tapping the vast resources of the Morehead and UNC-Chapel Hill, along with other universities and organizations in the area, the Middle School Science Club will participate in hands-on experiments, meet professional scientists, take unique field trips and host expert guest speakers. A snack is provided at each meeting, along with a pizza party at the end of each semester.

In past semesters, the club has visited the Carnivore Preservation Trust, taken an insider's tour of the UNC Cogeneration Facility, investigated the science of language, peered through microscopes in a genetics lab and tested out ideas for sustainable building. These are just to name a few of the club's many activities. Where's the club headed next? It's up to you!

Each section of the Middle School Science Club is capped at 16 students and led by two Morehead educators. Clubs meet three times each semester and advance registration is required.

All meetings are held on Saturdays, 2:30–5 p.m., at Morehead. Club dues for the year are $125* for Morehead members, or $145* for nonmembers. Beth Cranford is now coordinating the program; if you have any questions or would like to register, please contact her at (919) 843-7334.

* Cost includes most materials, though if specialized materials or transportation is required, additional costs may be incurred, but this is rare. There will always be advance notification of any additional costs.

Middle School Science Club registration is capped at 16 students.The student to educator ratio is 8:1 or better. Parents/caregivers are not expected to attend classes. Advance registration is required.

(Morehead reserves the right to cancel classes due to low enrollment. Families will be notified in advance if a class is cancelled.)
