Middle School Science Club
Grades 6, 7 and 8
Ever wanted to investigate the science of robots, get your hands dirty dissecting a shark, learn more about what makes you unique? Morehead's Middle School Science Club gives you the opportunity to do that and much more!
In this exciting program just for middle school students, club members work with college science majors to design activities based on club members' interests. Tapping the resources of Morehead and UNC-Chapel Hill, along with other science resources in the Triangle, Middle School Science Club members participate in hands-on experiments, meet professional scientists, take one-of-a-kind field trips and host expert guest speakers. A snack is provided at each meeting, along with a pizza party at the end of each semester.
In past semesters, club members have taken an insider's tour of the UNC Cogeneration Facility, toured the fluids lab on campus and observed the wave tank, made a self-carving pumpkin, created "Rube Goldberg" machines and extracted DNA. These are just a few of the club's many activities.
What will club members do next? If you're a member of the Middle School Science Club, it's up to you! Some possibilities include programming with Pico Crickets, working with lasers, building solar cars and designing small alarm systems to take home.
Each section of the Middle School Science Club is capped at 24 students and led by three Morehead educators. Advance registration is required, and members must register for the year.
