Peter Mills (AKA: Stinky Pete)
Education: Senior, English and Asian Studies Double Major, Poetry Writing Minor
Hometown: Meriden, CT
Experience with Children: This is my fourth year with the Morehead Afterschool Program. Along with this, I coach youth basketball at the YMCA every year. Before that, I worked two years at my local YMCA and summer camps at Boys and Girls Club. Here at the Planetarium, I'm also a summer camp counselor, fulldome theater presenter, and science stage presenter.
Goals for School Year and Career: I'm looking to have a great final year at UNC before joining the Peace Corps. I hope to combine my interests in nonprofit work and education by founding a successful nonprofit that provides education to young children, with an emphasis on science and English.
Hobbies/Fun Facts: I have played guitar since I was 12. I love orangutans and fudge. I know how to speak and write Hindi, Urdu, Spanish and some Burmese. The Blue Ridge Mountains is my favorite place in the world.
Why did you choose to work at Morehead?: As a child, I would often visit family in North Carolina. On these trips, we'd stop by Chapel Hill, which was my version of Disney World. Despite being a huge Tar Heels fan, my favorite place in Chapel Hill was the Planetarium, so my mother would bring me to a show in the theater every time we visited. It was the most magical place to me, and the chance I've had to work here and share that magic with kids has been one of the greatest opportunities I have ever had. My goal is to make this incredible place just as magical for the children I work with.
