Girl Scout Badge Workshops
In collaboration with Girl Scouts-North Carolina Coastal Pines, Morehead Planetarium and Science Center offers a series of badge workshops to assist Girl Scouts in mastering important science content. Current Girl Scout Troops can find dates for and register for the following events through the Girl Scout 2009–2010 Lead On Guide or online at www.nccoastalpines.org. The badge workshops offered during the 2009-2010 year include:
| Brownies |
Space Explorer: Get ready and blast off as your girls work on earning their Space Explorer Try-It to take home. Girls will learn about stars, the Moon and our solar system in the same planetarium dome that trained NASA's first astronauts. Planning an expedition to outer space, making a hand-held constellation and munching on some astronaut ice cream are sure to be highlights on this out-of-this-world adventure.
Night at the Planetarium: Sleep under the stars where the weather’s always perfect! Morehead is proud to announce an exclusive overnight extravaganza designed especially for Brownies. Explore science in a fun, exciting environment. After dinner, you'll watch a star theater show and participate in hands-on activities. Then we’ll sleep in the planetarium under a cloudless sky of beautiful stars. The next day we’ll wake up, eat breakfast, watch a "Science Live!" program and explore Zoom In. This is a one-of-a-kind science adventure for girls!
| Juniors |
Aerospace: Imaginations will take flight as girls build their own gliders, launch a rocket, and test their own paper airplane designs. They learn what it is like to live in space and see life-like stars through one of the world’s few Zeiss star projectors. Tasting some space snacks and touring the planetarium to see a tribute to the astronauts who trained at Morehead will round out a day of fun and space discovery. Girls will earn and take home the Aerospace badge.
Sky Search: Girls will earn and take home their Sky Search badge as they learn how to use a star map, identify constellations in a simulated night sky and study star stories of ancient cultures. They will also help the Moon go through its phases, give telescopes a try and learn what women are currently doing to make space a better place! After this workshop, girls will be able to look up at space and know what's really out there.
