Recommended Field Trip Itinerary

Grade 5

Morehead educators have carefully studied the North Carolina Essential Standards. Our educators have also reviewed all of our programming to identify the best correlations between our shows and your curriculum. Based on this review, we are pleased to make the following recommendations.

Best Choice Fulldome Planetarium Shows

All of Morehead Planetarium and Science Center’s planetarium shows are now presented in stunning high-definition fulldome digital video in the GlaxoSmithKline Fulldome Theater. If you see only one fulldome planetarium show during your visit, we recommend seeing the “best choice” show. The “best choice” show most closely aligns with your grade level’s curriculum objectives. For Grade 5, two shows can be considered “best choice.”

Astronaut NC Essential Standards

The exploration of space is the greatest endeavor that humankind has ever undertaken. What does it take to be part of this incredible journey? How does the human body respond to the environment of space? What does it take to become an astronaut? Actor Ewan McGregor narrates this exciting fulldome digital presentation. Produced by NSC Creative. Pairs well with the Science LIVE! program Human Body Test.

Wildest Weather in the Solar System Educator Resources NC Essential Standards

Experience weather extremes in space as never before. Fly through the dense atmosphere on Venus, methane storms on Titan and centuries-old anti-cyclones on Jupiter. We’ll explore the Solar System alongside our specially designed imaginary spacecraft, so sophisticated that it can take us into the fiercest of planetary cauldrons - bringing us up close with the most beautiful, powerful and mysterious weather phenomena in the Solar System. With lightning 10,000 times stronger than on Earth, winds of 1,200 miles per hour, and dust storms five miles high that could engulf entire planets, audiences will be glad they live on Earth! Produced by National Geographic. Pairs well with the Discovery Class Built to Tilt.

Additional Great Fulldome Planetarium Show Choices

For Grade 5 educators who would like their groups to view more than one fulldome show, we recommend seeing both "best choice" shows.

Science LIVE! Programs

Morehead educators present Science LIVE! on the Science Stage and, with advance notice, will tailor presentations to match your group’s grade level and curriculum.

Phenomenal Physics NC Essential Standards

Dramatic demonstrations and interactive experiments play a starring role as we discover the physics of our everyday world. How can a glass of water be turned upside down without the water falling out? Can the human body be used to make an electrical circuit? Audience participation is encouraged as we experiment with forces, motion and electromagnetism. A field trip favorite!

All Systems Go NC Essential Standards

Why do our hearts beat? How do we get energy? How many cells do our bodies have? What does our skin look like when it's magnified? Come find out in Science LIVE! All Systems Go. This adventure is all about the human body -- lots of systems that work separately and work together, too! We wouldn't be able to function without the systems within our bodies.

Magnificent Matter NC Essential Standards

Can a liquid be ripped in half? How are fireworks of differing colors made? Strange things can happen in this live presentation as we heat, cool, stretch and mix certain materials and chemicals to discover their properties. You’ve got to see it to believe it. Audience participation is encouraged.

Discovery Classes

Discovery Classes are hands-on, minds-on and designed specifically for your students. These programs add an exciting dimension to your visit.

Solar Systematics NC Essential Standards

What does our Solar System really look like? How do we know? In this hands-on adventure, students become NASA engineers as they design, build and test interplanetary landers that are needed to explore rocky worlds like Mars. Then they jump on board NASA’s Kepler Mission to learn about what it takes to be a planet hunter.

Built to Tilt NC Essential Standards

Why does Fall fall where it does? Why is it always followed by Winter? In this class we break misconceptions about why seasons happen on Earth, and use sensors and solar panels to test why our tilt makes all the difference. Students take these energy concepts to the next level by racing solar cars outside on their own racetrack. This class will teach students science essential standards through hands-on experimentation, and have them racing with the Sun!
