Plan a Visit from DESTINY

Please submit your form to request a DESTINY visit by September of the current school year to receive full consideration. Schools from Tier 1 (low wealth) districts receive priority consideration. Forms submitted after September will be considered only if spaces remain.

Eligibility

You are eligible to apply for a visit from a DESTINY mobile science lab if you are a DESTINY-trained teacher who has completed a workshop in one of these modules:

  • Biological Bodyguards (ELISA)
  • Brand Name Genes
  • From Finches to Fishes
  • Get a Clue / Case of the Crown Jewels
  • Mystery of the Crooked Cell
  • The Crucial Concentration

If you are not a DESTINY-trained teacher and would be interested in participating in our Non-Trained Teacher Pilot Program, you are eligible to request a visit ONLY for our "Get a Clue" module.

If you are interested in receiving a visit but have not yet completed a DESTINY teacher workshop, please e-mail destiny@unc.edu to sign up for the DESTINY listserv and receive notification of future workshops.

DESTINY Visits: Types and Fees (Effective July 1, 2014)

Please choose the type of DESTINY visit that serves your needs best. The six curriculum modules listed above may be provided by all three types of DESTINY visits. The two curriculum modules "BioBusiness" and "Weigh To Go!" can be provided ONLY by an educator classroom visit or by a "drop off materials" visit.

Mobile Science Lab "Bus" Visits

  • The fee for a mobile science lab visit is $350 per day.
  • If teachers from the same school request mobile science lab visits on consecutive days, the fee for each additional day is $275.
  • The mobile science lab can provide up to three lab sessions (24 students per session) per day.
  • Laboratory experiences are led primarily by the Morehead educator (the teacher must be present). If several lab sessions are scheduled on a single day, the teacher may provide "team teaching" assistance.

Educator Classroom Visits

When a class has more than 24 students and cannot be accommodated by the mobile science lab, which has a 24-student limit per session, Morehead suggests the educator classroom visit as an option. The mobile science lab is not included with the educator classroom visit.

  • The fee for an educator classroom visit is $200 per day.
  • If teachers from the same school request educator classroom visits on consecutive days, the fee for each additional day is $150.
  • The school must have the required equipment for the requested curriculum module.
  • DESTINY will provide only the consumable materials for the curriculum module, which will accommodate up to three sessions of 24 students each. Schools may group students creatively to ensure that all available spaces are used by students.
  • Laboratory experiences are led with a "team teaching" approach by the Morehead educator and the teacher. The Morehead educator leads the first session to model the methods for the teacher.

"Drop Off Materials" Visit

  • The fee for this service is $100 per module per day.
  • Laboratory experiences are led by the teacher.
  • The school must have the required equipment for the requested curriculum module.
  • DESTINY will provide only the consumable materials for the curriculum module, which will accommodate up to three sessions of 24 students each.
  • Visual teaching aids are available with this service upon request.
  • The teacher and the Morehead educator will confirm a list of consumable materials needed and a "drop off materials" date during a telephone planning session before the visit.

Online Request Form for DESTINY Visit

If you need assistance to complete this Online Request Form, email destiny@unc.edu and a staff member will help you through the process. Once you have submitted your completed request, the DESTINY staff will contact you via email to schedule a specific date for your visit.

Please note:

  • Each mobile science laboratory can usually provide up to three lab sessions per day.
  • Each individual teacher must submit a school visit request form, even if there are multiple teachers requesting a visit to the same school.
  • Scholarship assistance may be available to some schools through various Morehead grant funding.
  • DESTINY will give visit priority to Tier 1 designated counties (most economically distressed), grant-funded project counties and newly-trained teachers. Other school visit requests will be scheduled as time permits for travel.
  • Financial responsibility for your visit must be designated on your DESTINY Visit Request Form. Please confirm payment means with your school before you submit your DESTINY Visit Request Form.

We look forward to visiting your school!
