Experience with Children: I spent 1 year volunteering and 2 years working at the Jacksonville Commons Recreation Center afterschool and summer camp Programs as a Counselor for children K-6th grade, and 1 year at Riverworks at Sturgeon City river restoration program as an Intern where I educated children of all ages about the importance of environmental stewardship. I have also spent 4 years with the Morehead Planetarium and Science Center afterschool program as an Educator working with children from K-5th grade, 2 years working on the Science Stage at Morehead Planetarium and Science Center, and 1 year of experience with the Morehead Planetarium and Science Center summer camp program!
Goals for Summer and Career: My goal for this summer is to make sure every child at our summer camp program has the ROCKINEST most AWESOME camp experience possible while learning a MIND BLOWING amount of incredible science!!! Next year I will be working as an Education Programs Intern at Morehead Planetarium and Science Center full time and helping all the kids who visit us have the most memorable and informative visits possible. After which I may go one of two routes... (1) Go to graduate school to get my master in Education or... (2) Move out to California to pursue my masters degree in education slowly while being a professional Longboarder! In either case I ultimately want to be a full time educator in an institution where I really feel like I make a difference.
Hobbies/Fun Fact: I am actually a professional Longboarder and ride for a pro team. I have one Dog, Kalypso, and 2 Cats, Simba and Rafiki. Other than longboarding my favorite hobbies are Surfing, Tree Climbing, Dog Walking, and Food Eating. My favorite movie is the Lion King and I think ice cream is the best food ever!
Why did you choose to work at Morehead? Honestly I sort of fell into working at Morehead and it was quite a happy accident! I started volunteering here for a class when I was a sophomore at UNC and immediately loved it. I was drawn not only to the idea of working with kids, which I think is the best, but also how awesome the staff is and how eco-conscious the building and programs are. I have worked here every year since then, so for four years now, and I have enjoyed every minute of it. Every job at the planetarium is awesome in its own way, and I should know, having worked everything I could get my hands on, haha. I have worked with Afterschool, the Science Stage, Girl Scout Workshops, the Science Festival, Birthday Parties, Cirque Du Sciences, and of course with the Summer Camps. Every one gives you a chance to make a kids day awesome!!! I Love working here! There hasn’t been one day I haven’t been excited to come into work.
