Boy Scouts

Astronomy Merit Badge Workshop Register now!
Nov. 16, 2012
6-8 p.m.
$8/scout, $6/adult
(one adult free with each group of five or more scouts)

Scouts will work toward requirements for the astronomy merit badge as they model Earth, our Moon and our Sun; identify constellations in a simulated night sky; and use telescopes and binoculars to discover the real night sky. They will explore light pollution and folow the ecliptic path of the planets in our Solar System.

Please note:

  • Scouts will complete most of the requirements for the astronomy merit badge at this workshop. However, because of time constraints, scouts will also need to do some activities before or after the workshop to complete all requirements and earn the astronomy merit badge officially.
  • During this workshop, Morehead educators will help scouts complete requirements 2, 3, 4a, 4b, 5c, 5d (weather permitting), 6d, 8a and 8b (partially -- this is a 25-minute observation).
  • Please use the Supplemental Resource document as a tool to help you complete the remaning requirements for the Astronomy Merit Badge.
  • Due to time constraints, weather and the needs of individual scouts, educators may need to make some changes to the workshop, which may prevent the completion of all requirements listed above.
The workshop will be held rain or shine.

Cub Scouts

Astronomy Belt Loop and Academic Pin Workshop Register now!
Feb. 15, 2013
6-8 p.m.
$8/scout, $6/adult
(one adult free with each group of five or more scouts)

Cub scouts will complete all requirements for the astronomy belt loop and will work toward four or five necessary requirements for the astronomy academic pin during this two-hour, hands-on program. They will "travel" through our Solar System and into our Milky Way galaxy in the simulated sky of the planetarium, locate and identify celestial bodies with telescopes and create scale maps of our Solar System to take home.

Please note:

  • This workshop is designed to help scouts complete all of the requirements for the astronomy belt loop and requirements 2, 4 and 7 for the astronomy academic pin.
  • Please use the Supplemental Resource document to complete 2 of the remaining requirements to receive your Astronomy Academic Pin.
  • Due to time constraints, weather and the needs of individual scouts, educators may need to make some changes to the workshop, which may prevent the completion of all requirements listed above.
The workshop will be held rain or shine.
