Stagville under the Stars!posted Friday January 20, 2012
Mark your calendars for this free program on Saturday, Feb. 18, at Historic Stagville, site of one of the largest plantations in the antebellum South.
"Stagville under the Stars" (7:30-9:30 p.m.) features storytelling, focusing on astronomy-related myths and legends from African cultures; telescope viewing of the night sky; and a "constellation tour" led by Morehead educators, viewing the same stars that our ancestors saw. If skies are clear, Mars and Jupiter (and maybe Venus) will be visible, too.
Some of Stagville's original structures from the 1700s and 1800s will be lit by lanterns for nighttime exploration, with historic interpretors answering questions about the lives of enslaved persons who lived and worked at Stagville.
No reservations are needed, but on-site parking is limited, so plan to carpool with family and friends.
